post heart-attack meds

Had a heart attack several yeas ago, got stents with PCI, now doing well. Taking amlodipine, entresto, farxiga, spironolactone, and metropolol. To the extent that the main issue is keeping BP down, can someone explain what all these meds are for, and why they are all needed? My medical support group doesn't seem to be able to offer clear explanation. They're all good for you, they say. I'll accept that, but different meds should do different things. What are those different things?

  1. Hi Thanks for asking. I am sure you are aware, we aren't doctors and cannot offer medical advice. Your medical team should be willing to answer, and you are totally allowed to keep asking until you get a real answer. So much of living with a chronic illness like CVD means advocating for yourself and developing good communications with your doctor. Before you ask about these medicines, you might wish to go on their manufacturer's website (you can find that by googling the drug name) to see what it says the purpose is. Or ask your pharmacist for information about the drugs. Then take that information to your doctor's office to help guide your discussion. Let us know how it goes. All the best, Kathy (Team member)

    1. Doesn't seem like a likely manner in which to get help, but- all the moderator was doing was trying to offer you information.???? All of those meds you mentioned are easily researchable (is that a word?)...... it's the standard protocol prescribed for heart failure. Entresto was very expensive, but is now available in a generic form. They work (if you do the work and google them) by reducing the "load" on your heart, ultimately lowering your blood pressure. Farxiga does send excess sugars into your urine, thus working to prevent CKD or it's progression. No, I'm not a medical professional, so this isn't medical advice, rather a response to YOUR request for additional information. I've done my homework, perhaps you would consider doing the same. Best of Luck!
